Give it Up For The Power of Giving: Even Bugs Do It

"If you only knew what I know about the power of giving, you would not let a single meal pass without sharing it in some way." -Buddha I was already planning to tweet that quote above for Christmas Eve, which is one of my favorite quotes of the Buddha. Then I read this Science Times Article in the NY Times, about how many different species engage in gift-giving, including gift-giving inthe insect world. Of course, I'm always a playful critic of the way our economy works at this time of year, the way mind states themselves can become monetized. My favorite Christmas movie, besides Scrooged with Bill Murray, is Reverend Billy's What Would Jesus Buy? But that doesn't mean that the impulse to give is unnatural. In fact, it might be the most transformative thing a human can do. Merry Christmas, and please do give it up for the ones

“If you knew what I know about the power of giving, you would not let a single meal pass without sharing it in some way." - Buddha I've always loved this quote, because the Buddha is not talking about the power of giving on the other person. He's talking about the effect it has on the mind of the one who gives, how it solves the anxiety of the giver. This premise that altruism makes the giver happier runs contrary to much of long green economic theory. What the quote points out is one of the  basic hidden facts of human psychology, that being interested in helping others is itself a form of enlightened self interest— if done properly. Wealth is Not The Problem, Greed is The Problem

(cross posted on the Interdependence Project blog - follow Ethan on Facebook or Twitter) Since the decline of Occupy Wall Street as a major social and media phenomenon, the notion of wealth inequality has sort of dropped off my personal political and moral radar.  Then a friend sent me this video below the other day. It's a tutorial on wealth inequality in America. It's pretty amazing to have things demonstrated  visually for me. It really reopened my eyes. (more…)
